“Smart” technology is now available for naval lighting systems
Developed by Consolite Technology, it can be used for both interior and exterior lighting.
Centralised drivers permit reductions in weight, size and cost of luminaires, while allowing greater ease and flexibility of control, as well as simplified installation.
Lighting modes can be controlled area by area from a central location, such as the Bridge, with full IPMS integration if required.
For example, switching between:
- Bright and dim settings
- Dark adaptation
- Darken ship (stealth)
- NVG mode for night flying operations
- Emergency lighting
- Circadian rhythm settings
The latter is important for crew health and well being, especially those who see little exposure to daylight – colour temperature and brightness can be automatically adjusted according to time of day and ambient levels.
Sensors can be added to luminaires for monitoring various functions:
- Occupancy – switching automatically from dim to bright and back, saving energy
- Ambient light – adjusting illumination levels accordingly (daylight harvesting)
- Temperature
- Flicker
- Ambient noise
- Personnel location
- VOC gases
Overall benefits include:
- Lower initial cost of acquisition and installation
- Lower life cycle costs
- Maintenance feedback
- Ease and flexibility of controlling light levels and modes
- Crew retention
- Crew alertness and welfare
There is also the possibility to integrate LiFi communication into the system.
